About Hill Country Harmonica
Hill Country Harmonica (HCH) at Foxfire Ranch, feels like a sapling.
A seed planted a decade ago, that has fully emerged from the red clay of North Mississippi. Now is the time to nurture it with goodness -- the goodness that comes from a beloved community, the goodness that comes from honoring our roots while walking towards a bigger vision. This 10th anniversary of HCH is an invitation to deep learning and the exploration of ease, play, fellowship, and expression - all while nestled in the spirit of the North Mississippi Hill Country Blues.
Since its inception Hill Country Harmonica has been committed to showcasing African-American musicians and authentic cultural expression unique to the Deep South. This year we are honored to partner with Phil Wiggins - an outstanding musician, teacher, and storyteller - as we envision the next decade of Hill Country Harmonica.
On May 16 -17, 2020 you can expect two days of lovingly curated harmonica instruction, and a deep grounding in blues history and storytelling from Phil Wiggins, Wallace Coleman, Aki Kumar, Andrew Alli, Damion "Yella P" Pearson, Andrea Van Allen, Sharde Thomas, and the Rising Star Fife & Drum Band. We are also excited to welcome local historian Rhondalyn Peairs who will help ground these stories in a more authentic and expanded picture of Mississippi, and the bits of Africa that remain strong in the Hill Country.
This anniversary feels particularly special as the Hollowell family continues our celebration of 100 years of black land ownership while envisioning Foxfire's commitment to culture and community for the next century. We thank you! We thank HCH founders Adam Gussow and Jeff Silverman for their blood, sweat, and vision - for planting the seeds and handing over the reins. And we are deeply grateful to all of the hundreds of people who have participated, instructed, sponsored, and supported this gathering since its inception - we look forward to welcoming you home in the flesh when it is safe to do so.
See you virtually in May!
